Heddal Stave Church – Norway’s Wooden Masterpiece
Artist Comments
Heddal Stave Church is situated near Notodden, Telemark. It is the largest remaining stave church in Norway. With 3 turrets and standing 29 meters tall, it has the impressive appearance of a wooden cathedral.
Dating back to the middle ages, these unique wooden structures were built by the Vikings, to celebrate the birth of Christianity in Norway.
Looking like something out of a fairy tale, it has an equally mythical history. Built at the beginning of the 13th century, legend says it was constructed in three days by a mountain troll called Finn Fagerlokk.
Stave Churches
Stave churches are a style of medieval timber frame church. The post-and-lintel architecture, which is unique to Scandinavia, developed from traditional Viking construction methods. It is estimated there were once between 1,200 and 2,000 of these beautifully crafted churches in Norway. Today only 28 remain and the largest of these is the 800-years-old Heddal stave church.
