Artist Comments

The Impressionist era is one of the most significant of the 19th century. Impressionism saw a revolution in the style, technique, and intention of painting. Painters like Claude Monet, and Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Mary Cassatt and Pierre-Auguste Renoir tried to accurately and objectively record visual reality in terms of transient effects of light and color.

The Impressionist painters found that they could capture sunlight’s momentary and transient effects by painting en plein air. Typically, they portrayed overall visual effects instead of details and used short, “broken” brush strokes of mixed and unmixed color to achieve an effect of intense color vibration.

The desire to capture the natural world in its exact form is fundamental to the Impressionist movement. Unlike Naturalism, however, Impressionist painters do not attempt to capture the world in hyperrealistic detail. Instead, Impressionists want to capture an “impression” of the natural world. This impression includes the artist’s subjectivity.

Photographic development was an essential driving force behind much of the Impressionist philosophy. Photographers can capture a single, fleeting moment in time through the lens, creating a direct imprint of reality on a two-dimensional surface. Impressionist painters sought to capture this same sense in their paintings.

“You have to know how to seize just the right moment in a landscape instantaneously because that particular moment will never come again, and you’re always wondering if the impression you got was truthful.” – Claude Monet.”

En Plein air: En plein air is a French expression that means “in the open air,” and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors, which is also called peinture sur le motif (“painting on the ground”) in French.

Intentional Camera Movement (ICM)
ICM is both a photographic technique and an artistic means of expression. It involves deliberately moving the camera during a long exposure and can be used as a tool to alter reality, with the intent of creating an emotional response in the viewer.
