HASSELBLAD MASTERS 2021 COMPETITION
Hasselblad Masters is renowned as one of the most prestigious professional photographic competitions. Since its inception in 2001, Hasselblad Masters has brought many incredible talents to light, giving not only acclaimed professionals but also aspiring newcomers the opportunity to become recognized in the photographic world. Creatives have the chance to present their most unique and innovative work in order to compete for a spot in the distinguished group of the 2021 Hasselblad Masters.
Celebrating the profession of photography itself, Hasselblad Masters is open to all professional photographers* who have been actively working in the field for more than three years. Entries can be shot on any digital camera, regardless of brand or format, that have at least 16 megapixels. Photographs shot on drone and film cameras are also applicable for entry, while images made with smartphone and tablet cameras are not eligible.
This year’s Hasselblad Masters is larger than previous years and has expanded to 12 categories, including the newest one, Heritage, which commemorates Hasselblad’s 80-year anniversary. The year 2021 marks 80 years of Hasselblad cameras having captured numerous photographs that have become known as classic, iconic images, and therefore, are part of Hasselblad’s history. With the new Heritage category, photographers are asked to use their creativity to submit images that celebrate Hasselblad’s rich heritage.
Being selected as one of the 12 winners means earning the coveted title of “Hasselblad Master” in addition to receiving their own medium format mirrorless Hasselblad camera. With their Hasselblad cameras, the winners take part in a collaborative project with Hasselblad, which is then published in the commemorative Hasselblad Masters book as well as digitally on all Hasselblad channels.
Hasselblad Masters proves to be more and more popular among photographers with each competition – the 2016 Hasselblad Masters boasted more than 10,000 entries followed by over 31,500 entries for the 2018 Hasselblad Masters. Stunning imagery from the final 11 winners in 2018 were included in the Hasselblad Masters Volume 6 book which centered on the theme “Innovate.” These images were displayed at Photokina 2018 in addition to galleries and media publications around the globe.
Hasselblad Masters are judged on their photographic ability, creativity, compositional skills, conceptual strength and technique. Entrants will first face the Hasselblad Internal Jury consisting of Hasselblad staff, experts in the field of photography and cameras. The Hasselblad Internal Jury will select ten finalists in each category that showcase a high level of technical skill and creative flair. Voting will then be opened up to the public in addition to the Hasselblad Grand Jury, which includes several top photographic figures. Together with the Public Jury vote, which acts as a seat on the Grand Jury, the Hasselblad Masters are chosen from the 120 finalists. The 2021 Hasselblad Grand Jury will be unveiled later in the year.

“I am immensely grateful for being awarded 1st Place Category Winner in the prestigious Budapest International Foto Awards. I feel privileged to have my work showcased alongside such talented and creative artists. Congratulations to all the photographers and a huge thank you to the esteemed jury.
How we Bleed the Earth, our Guilt and Shame” is series of images portraying the impact of humankind’s destructive industrial practices on the natural environment. The images portray the terrible beauty of mining’s toxic impact on the land, whilst serving as a reminder of man’s folly.
Human impact on the environment or anthropogenic impact includes changes to biophysical environments and ecosystems, biodiversity, and natural resources. This affects global warming, environmental degradation such as ocean acidification, mass extinction and biodiversity loss, creating an ecological crisis, and ecological collapse. Modifying the environment to fit the needs of society is causing severe effects, which become worse as the problem of human overpopulation continues.
The opencast mines of Rio Tinto have been excavated since the 19th century, providing heavy metal ores such as iron, copper, silver and gold. Mountains, valleys and villages have disappeared from the hungry machinery devouring the land implacably, year after year. Giant scars on the landscape have been referred to as otherworldly with terrible hues of blue, green and red. The runoffs from these mines have created an eerie blood red flow in the river, hence the name Tinto. The river flows to the gulf of Cadiz carrying high acidity levels and heavy metals, in effect making this an environment disaster, a toxic reminder of human’s ability to irreversibly destroy the landscape in the name of corporate profits, a legacy of greed for future generations.”

Team Norway – World Photographic Cup 2021
World Photographic Cup
The World Photographic Cup was founded in 2013 as a cooperative effort by The Federation of European Photographers (FEP) and Professional Photographers of America (PPA). Its singular goal is to unite photographers in a spirit of friendship and cooperation. A Governing Committee has been created to conduct the ongoing affairs of the competition, also supported by UAPP (United Asian Professional Photography) and AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography). The brotherhood and sisterhood of photography is a bond that transcends language, culture, and geography. That’s the foundation behind the World Photographic Cup, a one of a kind international team competition.
The WPC organizing body is made up of photographers from across Europe, the United States, and Canada. Images are judged by a committee of 15 highly-trained photographers from around the world.

“I am honored and excited and certainly flattered to be on the national team in photography, representing Norway in the World Photographic Cup 2021. Being in the illustrious company of so many talented photographers is incredibly humbling.”
Landskonkurransen 2020
The Norwegian National Photography Awards (Landskonkurransen) is the country’s most prestigious photography awards. Landskonkurransen is an annual competition accepting entries from all professional photographers and students / apprentices. The photographer with the highest total score is named Norwegian Photographer of the Year. The student / apprentice with the highest score is named Student / Apprentice of the Year. The picture with the highest score in each category becomes category winners. Gold, silver and bronze medals are also awarded in each category.
The awards in the National Competition form the basis for selection for the national team in photography, participating in the World Photographic Cup – the World Cup in Photography.
History
The national competition as we know it today took its form in the mid-80s, but the competition itself has its roots back to 1927. Then, the Norwegian Photographers’ National Association (which later became the Norwegian Photographer’s Association) organized its first annual Awards Competition, with one category and six participants. Since then, the competition has undergone several changes, both in name and form, and has grown considerably. Today, the National Competition is one of the country’s largest of its kind.
Norges Fotografforbund
The Norwegian Photographer’s Association (NFF) was founded in 1894. It is a Norwegian association with more than 500 professional photographers. The association’s purpose is to bring together the country’s professional photographers to collaborate on the development of photography and safeguard the interest of the photographer.
Underwater Study – News Article in Vest-Telemark Blad
Artist Torleif Lie searches for a magical, dreamlike expression in his photographs and lives for creating timeless imagery portraying a deeper perspective.
He seeks to touch his audience’s soul and mind and present them with something they have not before seen. Now the artist has gone underwater to create unique imagery in the magical and mysterious world of weightlessness.
Dressed in a large silk fabric, Ingvild Aase moves slowly through the pool with water reaching her chest. The vibrant pink fabric flows in glittering waves behind her as she walks down the underwater catwalk. Torleif Lie is submerged underwater, breathing through a snorkel while he photographs Aase with an underwater camera system. After the model has walked down the catwalk the two gathers together to study the photographs from the most recent session. – Your movements were elegant and sublime, and there were wonderful waves in the silk fabric, says Lie to Aase afterward.
This type of work requires a lot of patience and fine-tuning. Every little detail is essential. All the elements need to coincide to achieve the desired result, which is not easy to accomplish when working in such a challenging underwater environment. Controlling the air bubbles, how the model moves her body and how the fabric flows in the water, are all crucial factors. Even a misplaced finger can make the difference between a sublime image and an unusable one.
Torleif Lie is an award-winning photographer with a career in underwater photography spanning more than a decade. Born in Stavanger, Norway, with his ancestors from Telemark, he currently resides in Vråliosen. His work takes him on journeys all over the world.
Due to the pandemic and recent traveling restrictions, he decided to seek artistic opportunities in his local community. – Gaining access to a commercial pool of this size is not easily attained. Due to the pandemic, the pool was closed for the public, and we were fortunate to be granted exclusive access for several weeks, he says
The swimming pool at Straand hotel in Vrådal has been converted into a photo studio. Lie has been planning this project for three months and has spent two weeks building an underwater studio. For the last three weeks, he has been photographing models underwater.
–For the first time in my career, I have had the opportunity to create the artistic underwater imagery of divine models I have been dreaming of, says Lie.
The artist desired to work with local models, and he is grateful for the opportunity to work with Ingvild Aase from Seljord. – Ingvild does not have prior modeling experience, but she is incredibly talented. Her ability to gracefully move and express herself underwater is exceptional, says Lie.
Aase says that the collaboration between the two came about a bit by chance and that her day job is working as a kindergarten teacher in Bø. For the last couple of weeks, she has driven one and a half hours each day to model in the pool in Vrådal. – We keep working for as long as Ingvild decides. I am very impressed by how long she endures in the water and how late in the evenings we work, especially considering she will attend her day job early tomorrow morning, says Lie.
– My desire is to capture a dreamlike freedom in a weightless state with focus on the beautiful and mysterious. Images that convey an underlying message and a deeper perspective, tells the artist.
Creating a beautiful image of a model in a studio is one thing. To accomplish this underwater is an entirely different challenge. On their first day, they worked exclusively on teaching breathing and modeling techniques. – It`s exciting work, but also very demanding. There are so many considerations; if one finger is out of place, the photograph can be ruined, says Aase.
– We live in a world that is oversaturated by photographs. Nice, easy, and ordinary has been done before, Lie says. He wants to create something new, something unique, and he has found his arena underwater.
Aase moves gracefully down the underwater catwalk with the vibrant silk fabric flowing several meters behind her. A burst of flashes fires from below the surface, creating a fascinating spectacle. After each session, they study the photographs and decide on small adjustments for the next session.
Now it’s time for a break. Even with a comfortable water temperature, the body gets cold after several hours in the pool. Both the model and the photographer takes a hot shower to prepare for the next session.
– Underwater photography requires one to work in a slow phase. It’s a demanding medium to work in, but the results can be incredibly rewarding, says Lie.
For the next shoot, Aase changes into a dress. Elegantly dressed as for a summer party, she enters the pool. This time they are both completely submerged underwater. Lie photographs her as she dives under and swims across the pool. From above, she looks like a princess from a fairy tale as she gracefully glides through the water.
Lie`s devotion to his craft is admirable with his artwork sourced by collectors worldwide. – I am passionately interested in creating timeless imagery with an underlaying message . Early in my career I made the conscious decision to only offer my work on the finest museum grade art materials in the world, says Lie.
After completing three weeks of photographing models in the pool, months of editing work and print testing awaits. The result will be outstanding, with a premium price to match the quality of his work. – Do you live for art – Yes, I live for creating timeless imagery, and I feel privileged to make a living of my greatest passion.

Anthropogenic #6 accepted in the esteemed PPA Loan Collection
PPA’s International Photographic Competition
To enter the IPC, photographers submit prints, electronic files and physical and/or digital albums to be judged by a panel of qualified experts. Competitors must designate the category under which each image is being submitted. The three categories include photographic open, artist competition, and wedding competition. Submissions will either merit or not merit and are judged against a standard of excellence using PPA’s “12 elements of a merit image”. Images that merit are then judged for the opportunity to become part of PPA’s prestigious Loan Collection—the best of the best in photography.
The PPA Loan Collection Book
Simply put, the Loan Collection exhibits the best of the best from the IPC. These amazing images are collected into a gorgeous and massive, hardcover Showcase book. This book is made available for purchase to collectors all over the world. Most importantly, it is known for being a collection of images that set the standard for quality in our industry. PPA-approved judges are trained to be aware of these 12 elements when judging images to the PPA merit level. These 12 elements bring together both the historical and modern practice of our profession.
While every image will have traces of some of these 12 elements, only the best of the best will have them all.

Artist Comments
I have spent years experimenting in the artistic field of my passion and try to implement monochrome photography in my work as often as possible. I find that light and dark and the interplay between the two contrasting elements can be more interesting to focus on than color relationships. I consider monochrome photography not as a technical limitation but as a creative choice. It lends a certain timeless quality to the images.”

Varden is a local newspaper published in Skien, Norway.
The newspaper was first established with a test issue on 17 December 1874, with Johan Christian Tandberg Castberg as first editor-in-chief. It has been published daily since 1895. Its current editor-in-chief is Tom Erik Thorsen.
The leading newspaper in Telemark county for many years, Varden was surpassed by Telemark Arbeiderblad in 1974, only to regain the number one spot in 1988.
At the time Varden was established, newspapers in Norway had close ties with political parties. Varden was special in that it changed political allegiance from Liberal to Conservative, in 1953. The ties between political parties and newspapers no longer exist. Today, the newspaper classifies itself as an “independent” newspaper, which works to promote a liberal and democratic society with respect for individual rights, social fairness and free enterprise.
Varden has a circulation of 27,341 and 25,859 subscribers.

Our trademark is modern approach to photography coupled with respect towards tradition. In the spirit of reciprocity, at ND AWARDS, our participants are the center of the competition as this award-giving body cannot exist without its participants. The latter are just as equally important for us as we are for them. In the same vein, we illuminate the path to development as we continue to discover, inspire and find out track promotion for the best artists.
Mission and vision
Photography is a creative art where the artist may present not only the image itself, but also the story behind it. Grinding the necessary skills requires eons upon eons of practice. While winning the contest can be extremely difficult as there is usually no guarantee to break through a huge competition, our equally competent and nonpartisan jury will only choose entries that exemplify an immaculate style and a fresh approach to photography.

Unique Moments in Time
The award-winning photographer Torleif Lie is just as much an artist as a photographer.
– My biggest passion is nature and landscape photography. I create photographic artwork based on a personal interpretation of a place. I consider myself an artist who uses photography to express myself, explains Torleif Lie.
He has won several international awards for his work and was recently one of the winners in the prestigious International Color Awards. He has also won several awards in Prix de La Photographie Paris, One Eyeland Awards and Moscow International Foto Awards. There is a tremendous amount of work behind his great photographs.
– When I create an image, I first start with a concept and then spend several months on research. I usually spend two weeks on location, capturing image files using one of the most advanced camera systems in the world. Only the best instrument can achieve the desired quality, says Lie.
The quality of the camera system is essential, but it is after the raw files are recorded that the main part of the creation process begins.
– I start with one or more raw files that I consider to be sketches. Based on these files, I usually spend three to four months, sometimes several years, on completing an image. I work with several layers to achieve the desired result. I consider the process quite similar to how a painter creates a painting.
At the fair, Lie will display several of his photographs and hope the audience will appreciate his art.
– During the exhibition there will be displayed a selection of photographs on different art mediums, sizes, and price ranges. I also offer fine art prints without framing at an affordable price point. This allows the collector to outsource a frame locally at a desired price point to compliments their interior design.
