Artist Comments

“Valhalla Rising” exemplifies our human desire to find grounding and purpose by assigning an iconic status to scenes imbued with the sublime, perhaps as idols to our self-awareness.

This expertly crafted photograph of a unique moment in time and space allows us to reflect on the symbolic nature of light, as the essence of life, and shadows that remind us of our brevity and the certainty of death. As we explore the myriads of details in the image, slowly revealing the essence of this eminence and its grandiose nature, it becomes easier to understand the emotions and aspirations we carry onto its imposing presence. “Valhalla Rising” is hope and resilience, amazement at our self-awareness, or a metaphysical question mark for some, and a form of worship to our human capabilities. It may also serve to document the new era of the anthropocene, one that reminds us of our human responsibilities. Ultimately, the beauty of the image is also a reminder that the resilience of both the invasive human specie and Preikestolen are now forever linked”.

Preikestolen

Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) is a famous tourist attraction in the municipality of Forsand in Rogaland, Norway. This majestic cliff formation rises 2000 feet above the Lysefjord. It sits on the north side of the fjord, opposite the Kjerag plateau, located on the south side.

The cliff was formed during the ice age, approximately 10,000 years ago, when the edges of the glacier reached the cliff. The water from the glacier froze in the crevices of the mountain and eventually broke off large, angular blocks, which were later carried away with the glacier. This is the cause of the angular shape of the plateau. Atop the cliff, there is an almost flat top of approximately 25 by 25 meters (82 ft × 82 ft).

Along the plateau there are deep cracks. Due to these cracks, the plateau will at some point fall down, but all the geological investigations have concluded that this will not happen in the foreseeable future.

In the final scene of Mission Impossible 6 – Fallout, Tom Cruise clings to the rock face of the 2000 feet Preikestolen in Western Norway.
